The Prevention Resource Center is a service of the Abilene Regional Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Inc. and is funded by the Department of State Health Services.

The goal of the PRC is to increase the effectiveness and visibility of prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) use and abuse and mental health issues within our thirty county region through information dissemination, community education, identification of training resources and best practices in prevention.

We serve the following counties:  Archer, Baylor, Brown, Callahan, Clay, Coleman, Comanche, Cottle, Eastland, Fisher, Foard, Hardeman, Haskell, Jack, Jones, Kent, Knox, Mitchell, Montague, Nolan, Runnels, Scurry, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Taylor, Throckmorton, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young.

The PRC2 is active in the support, coordination, and marketing of regional mental health and ATOD prevention efforts.  The PRC will also exchange information with organizations, entities, and groups which provide services related to substance abuse prevention including Education Service Centers, school, school districts, colleges, and universities, community groups, task force, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), drug free housing programs, U.S. Department of justice Weed & Seed projects, and prevention programs funded by the Governor’s Office Criminal Justice Division.

The services we provide include:

  • Training - The PRC will coordinate with training specialists within our region and give support to all mental health and ATOD prevention training events.
  • Library - Community members have full access to a library consisting of books, videos, curricula, and current professional journals.  We have a viewing area for those who might need to preview a video before checking it out.
  • Clearinghouse - A clearinghouse fully stocked with a broad selection of materials including pamphlets, posters, bookmarks, and book covers all current on today’s drug trends and the latest prevention strategies.
  • Research - PRC2 will collect mental health and ATOD prevention research information, perform ongoing needs assessments, and disseminate that information to the region.  We will also serve as a source for the latest in research materials such as periodicals, reports, and the internet.
  • Referrals - PRC2 will facilitate, coordinate, and in other ways act as a catalyst for the sharing and development of prevention training, planning, and activities between and among providers and others.
  • Tobacco Strategies - PRC provides minor and tobacco strategies including community education, tobacco retailer education efforts, and tobacco media awareness.
